Picture Books Where the Bully Becomes a Friend

By Cory Tarwater · September 24, 2026 · About a 5-minute read

Two young children sharing a picture book on a wooden dock at a sunset pond, with the title Picture Books Where the Bully Becomes a Friend.

Every child meets someone unkind sooner or later. And most bullying books for little kids end the same way. The bully gets caught, or learns a lesson, and walks off the page. But some of the best stories go one step further. The bully changes. The two kids become friends. And a child reading along learns something hopeful: people can grow, and kindness is often what helps them do it.

I love these stories because they give kids two lessons at once. The child who is hurting learns they have choices. And the child who has been unkind learns they are not stuck being the villain. Here are six picture books that do this beautifully, for ages 3 to 8.

1. Enemy Pie by Derek Munson

A boy is sure the new kid on the street is his worst enemy. His dad offers to bake an “enemy pie,” but there is a catch. First he has to spend a whole day with that enemy. You can guess what happens. It’s a funny, warm story about how hard it is to stay mad at someone once you actually get to know them.

2. The Recess Queen by Alexis O’Neill

Mean Jean rules the playground, and nobody plays until she says so. Then a tiny new girl does something no one else has tried. She invites Jean to play. This one has a bouncy, rhyming rhythm that kids love to hear out loud, and it shows how one friendly invitation can change the whole playground.

3. Llama Llama and the Bully Goat by Anna Dewdney

Llama Llama loves school until Gilroy Goat starts teasing and calling names. Llama learns to use his words and tell the teacher, and Gilroy gets a chance to do better. It’s perfect for preschoolers, and it pairs a kindness lesson with the important message that telling a grown-up is the right thing to do.

4. Chester Raccoon and the Big Bad Bully by Audrey Penn

A badger is pushing the little animals around, and Chester doesn’t know what to do. His mother helps him see the bully in a new way, with a gentle lesson about smoothing out rough edges. It’s a thoughtful story for kids who are starting to ask why someone would be mean in the first place.

5. Bully by Laura Vaccaro Seeger

A young bull pushes the other animals away with one hurtful word after another, until someone finally tells him what he is being. This book has very few words and big, bold pictures, so it works well with the youngest readers. The best moment comes at the end, when the bull realizes what he has done and says he’s sorry.

6. The Grumble-Gator’s Greatest Raft by Cory Tarwater

I have to include my own book here, because this is exactly the story I set out to write. Toby, a small turtle, is splashed and teased by Barnaby, a grumpy gator. Toby’s friends tell him to hit back. Instead, he remembers his father’s words: “A fist can break a branch, but a kind word can plant a forest.” He invites Barnaby to build a raft with him, and by sunset the Grumble-Gator is just Barnaby, a friend. I wrote more about why in why I wrote a book where the bully becomes the hero.

How to read these books with your child

Stories like these open the door to a real talk. So when you close the book, ask one question and give your child time to answer. Try “Why do you think the bully acted that way?” or “What helped them change?” or “Have you ever felt like the grumpy one?” You do not need a perfect answer. You just need to listen.

And one important note. These books show kindness changing a bully, but kids should always know that telling a trusted grown-up is brave and smart, especially when someone keeps being unkind. Being kind and asking for help go together.

The takeaway

The best bully stories do more than warn kids about mean people. They show that a little courage and a lot of kindness can turn an enemy into a friend. That is a lesson worth reading again and again, especially during Bullying Prevention Month this October.
